The Importance of FIKA

THE IMPORTANCE OF FIKA

It is a part of your day when you take a break,

with a cup of coffee, tea, and some cake.

You can do it by yourself or with a friend,

it helps you get through the day,

until it ends.

FIKA is a time to slow down and appreciate the good things in life. This so called wellbeing term involves taking a specific time out of your schedule or your day to relax, contemplate, and re-energise your body and mind.

HOW DID I COME TO UNDERSTAND FIKA?

Whilst my son was studying at Lund University, in Sweden, my husband and I were shocked to see so many young people sitting in coffee houses, chatting and drinking coffee. When we asked, why? Their reply was we are having FIKA, a break from studying. So why do we rush around at 100 miles an hour being so unproductive, when we could divide our day into productive sections and be happier in our jobs and lives?

HOW DO I USE FIKA?

I use FIKA breaks when working with my clients Decluttering and Organising their homes. It provides time to pause and reassess situations, which many people find very stressful. By coaching clients on the importance of breaks, we teach people the pace of life doesn’t have to so fast. When we start making a few simple changes in our lifestyle we can limit the amount of stress in our lives.

HOW CAN YOU MAKE TIME FOR FIKA?

FIKA can be as short or as long as you need it. The key is working it into your daily lifestyle. In our daily lives, we rarely take time to do that. Making time for FIKA is also making time to slow down to really connect with friends and colleagues on a social level. Ultimately, we can all benefit greatly from that!

STOP! PAUSE! BREATHE! - EAT FIKA!
